In this video, owner and company president, Allan Hendersen explains how American Asphalt grew to become a leader in the paving industry. He says, “The first jobs we were doing were postage stamps. Gradually, we got larger. We never went after the dollar but sought the reputation of giving the best product, the best service we can, for a fair price.”

Both Hendersen and Kim Henschel, company vice president, remember how they would get up in the morning, get the truck ready, and do asphalt paving for driveways in Hillsborough, Atherton, and Woodside.  They would return home only around 10 pm, wake up at 4 am the next morning and leave for work.

Chief estimator, Dale Kunz, reiterates that it was steady growth. “Allan kept the brakes on it because there is no point in growing so fast that you can’t handle what the clients want”, he explains.
Henschel emphasizes, “It’s been very important to us that we always did the best we could do. It’s honesty, knowledge and quality for me and my business.”

Today American Asphalt has over 100 employees. COO, Stephen Aguirre says, “We are a very people-oriented company.”  The staff has a great sense of pride working for the company, which is evident in the testimonials of production manager, Javier Velazquez, and job cost coordinator, Jackie Buckley.

Like many of his colleagues, Velazquez too has been with American Asphalt almost since the beginning. He says, “When I started working here, there were probably 12 to 15 employees. At that time, we only had two bobtails and most of our equipment was rented. I’ve been here almost 29 years and I think I’m going to retire here. I want to leave a lot of leaders because I want this company to keep growing. That’s my goal.”

Buckley who also takes great pride in working for American Asphalt simply “can’t imagine working anywhere else”. She says, “I’m so passionate about what I do here. There is a sense of loyalty and a lot of pride. We just have so much fun together. We all really, genuinely like each other and it’s so great. We’re family.”
