Concrete Stairs Don’t Need to Look Industrial

Designing concrete stairs for your new commercial center? Replacing the existing stairs in your HOA? Tap into your creativity and think outside the box! You can have virtually any shape, color and pattern that you want. Just because they are made from concrete does not mean your stairs must look traditional or boring.

While you don’t have to sacrifice style for function, safety is also critical. The dimensions of your steps are as important as their visual appeal. As experienced concrete contractors, we are happy to offer advice on how to enhance curb appeal while adhering to safety guidelines with concrete stairs.

  • Visual impact: The shape and style of your concrete stairs can give your property a sophisticated look. Unfortunately, although stairs occupy a prominent position in the overall building structure, their visual impact is often ignored. With a little bit of thought and creativity, your concrete steps can become the focal point of your entryway and make a grand impression.

Explore your choices in stamped and patterned concrete. There are so many possibilities to take your stairs from bland to grand!  At American Asphalt, we also offer you the option of matching the color and texture of your stairs to your walkways and entryways. You can even combine them with another material such as marble, for an elegant look.

Additionally, our concrete stairs can be precast and brought over to your property to minimize any disruption to your daily schedule. Circular, oval, rectangular, square or an irregular shape—use your space creatively and wisely to design attractive, safe stairs.

  • User safety: Riser height and tread depth are important considerations and should accommodate an average person’s stride. While local building codes determine the dimensions in your area, generally the 7-11 rule is followed across the United States, i.e. a 7” rise and 11” run. Deeper treads and short risers are recommended for user safety. Knowing that the ratio can vary depending on the application, we offer some basic guidelines you can follow:

Riser height

  • 4″ to 4-1/2″
  • 5″ to 5-1/2″
  • 6″ to 6-1/2″
  • 7″ to 7-1/2″

Tread depth

  • 18″ to 19″
  • 16″ to 17″
  • 14″ to 15″
  • 10″ to 11″
