Early in the process of deciding if your pavement surfaces
are in need of care or repair, you may want to make an initial visual
inspection of the pavement areas in question.
The Surface Rating Report (click here for a printable report copy) has been specially
designed to help you evaluate the condition of your pavement surfaces, and to help isolate
those areas in need of priority attention.
GETTING STARTED: In Three Easy
Steps
Step 1:
Walk around your property looking for pavement conditions shown in the
survey photographs. Look for unusual wear and tear in heavy traffic areas or
damage caused by automobile fluid leaks and water. All will affect asphalt pavement life.

Step 2:
Note the location and estimate and total square footage of a
particular area. Make a rough calculation of the percentage of the
paved area that is affected by the condition. Note these observations in the space provided.
For example:
#5 Fair
Visible Distress: Moderate to severe raveling (loss of fine and course aggregate).
Similar to corncob. Considerable amounts of sand and loose rocks are near drains and low areas.
Ponding water areas show cracking. Longitudinal and transverse cracks (open 1/2"). Block
cracking up to 50% of surface. Some patching or edge wedging in good condition.
General Condition: Surface aging. Sound structural Condition. Needs sealcoat or
CalTrans slurry surfacing (7-10 years). If severe roughness may need asphalt overlay (10 years).

Step 3:
Contact American Asphalt via mail, fax, phone or email.
Visible Distress: No longitudinal cracks except reflection of paving joints.
Occasional transverse cracks, widely spaced (40' or greater). All cracks sealed or tight
(open 1/4" or less).
General Condition: Recent sealcoat. Little or no maintenance required.

#7 Good
Visible Distress: Very little or no raveling, surface shows some traffic wear.
Longitudinal cracks (open 1/4") due to reflection of paving joints. Transverse cracks
(open 1/4") spaced 10 feet or more apart. Little or slight crack raveling. No patching or
very few patches in excellent condition.
General Condition: First signs of aging. Maintain with routine crack filling.

#6 Good
Visible Distress: Slight raveling (loss of lines) and traffic wear especially
near drains and water run-off from irrigation. Longitudinal cracks (open 1/4"1/2") some
spaced less than 10 feet. First signs of block cracking (Cracks linked together) Occasional
patching in good condition.
General Condition: Shows signs of aging. Sound structural condition.
Should extend life with seal coat (3-5 years).

#5 Fair

Visible Distress: Severe surface raveling. Multiple longitudinal & transverse cracking
with slight raveling. Longitudinal cracking in wheel path. Block cracking (over 50% of surface).
Patching in fair condition. Slight rutting or distortions (1/2"deep or less).
General Condition: Significant aging and first sign of need for strengthening.
Would benefit from a petromat overlay, asphalt patching, hot crackfilling and CalTrans slurry
surfacing. Should be done as a minimum treatment.

#3 Poor
Visible Distress: Closely spaced longitudinal and transverse crackling often
showing raveling and crack erosion. Severe block cracking and ëalligatoringí. Some alligator
cracking (less then 25% of surface). Patches in fair to poor condition. Moderate rutting or
distortion (1" to 2" deep).Occasional potholes. Unable to shed water.
General Condition: Needs patching and major overlay or complete recycling.

Visible Distress: Alligator cracking (over 25% of surface). Severe distortions
(over 2" deep). Extensive patching in poor condtion. Potholes.
General Condition: Severe deterioration. Need reconstruction with extensive base repair.

Visible Distress: Severe distress with extensive loss of surface integrity.
