Black is the new green

At American Asphalt we were sustainable before sustainable was cool. It’s a little known fact that, pound for pound, the single most commonly recycled product in America is…asphalt!

Asphalt is truly a renewable resource. Instead of old roadways heading for landfill, recycling machines from American Asphalt grind up the old road surface and reuse it for base material in parking lots and roadbeds.

Not only do we keep the old asphalt out of the waste stream, communities can get credit for the tonnage of material they recycle. So we save our customers money and help save the environment at the same time.

We turn used tires into new roadways

Fact: American Asphalt is the largest recycler of used tires in California. Over the last decade we’ve kept approximately 10 million tires out of landfills by recycling them as part of our rubberized emulsion in slurry seal. We cut the tires into quarters, pulverize them, use a magnet to remove the steel belts, and then grind the pieces to the consistency of talcum powder. Mixed into liquid asphalt, the resulting rubberized slurry seal looks great and lasts even longer than conventional asphalt roadways. Currently, in the largest recycled rubber project in the U.S., the city of San Diego is using our recycled rubberized slurry seal in their city streets. Its just one more way we get more miles out of a set of radials.
